He thus formed a shock duo with Stephen Curry, who offered a memorable reaction when discussing his potential arrival at Golden State.
The Warriors dynasty lasted more than half a decade, but could possibly never have existed if Kevin Durant had not arrived in San Francisco during the summer of 2016.
Fortunately for the Californians, fate had been favorable to them since the Slim Reaper was indeed part of the success of Dub Nation. He was even one of the main architects during the 2017 and 2018 Finals, of which he was elected MVP.
During this great era for the franchise, Golden State had almost the entire league at its feet.
The collection of stars it assembled was one of the most formidable ever seen in NBA history, and fans can thank Stephen Curry for that. The latter was not only one of their best assets, but would also have greatly facilitated the arrival of KD at his side.
Curry’s first reaction to KD’s possible arrival to the Warriors
A few weeks before Durant arrived in the Bay, Curry became the first unanimous MVP in league history.
The result of an incredible season concluded with a record of 73-9 for which he placed himself as the No. 1 reason. As such, he could have taken a dim view of the arrival of a star who could overshadow him. Quite the opposite happened, however, as Bob Myers revealed on The TK Show:
That summer, I remember Curry came into my office and we talked about the season and the team… At the end of the discussion, I said, “What if Durant decided to join us?”
He looked me in the eye and said, “Do you think he would want to come here?” I said, “I don’t know, but if he agrees to interview and it becomes a possibility, what do we think?”
He looked me in the eyes and said, “Of course I’d be up for it!” This really shows Curry’s selflessness, because it was his team, it was his work. In his place, many people would have said no and it would never have happened.
Captivated by his player’s reaction, the Californian GM at the time was able to complete this major recruitment.
It also seems that Steph welcomed KD’s departure just as well, whom he welcomed with open arms during their first reunion in Golden State afterwards:
