Victor Wembanyama mocked with brutal chants during MSG debut at Spurs-Knicks game as NBA fans warn 'he won't forget it' | The US Sun

NEW York Knicks fans haven’t subscribed to the Victor Wembanyama hype.

The Knicks faithful belted out “overrated” chants as the San Antonio Spurs star made his Madison Square Garden debut, which would end in a 126-105 loss.

Wembanyama, 19, and his Spurs traveled to New York City to face the Knicks on Wednesday night.

But the French phenom’s first game at the World’s Most Famous Arena didn’t go as he had hoped.

The 7-foot-4 center struggled mightily and the Knicks led by as many as 30 points during the matchup.

And as Wemby headed to the charity stripe late in the third quarter, the MSG crowd made fun at the No. 1 pick’s expense, adding to his misery with “overrated” chants.

But NBA fans quickly pointed out the mockery could come back to haunt Knicks fans with Wembanyama expected to dominate the league for years to come.

“The Knicks fans chanting overrated at Wemby when their franchise is the most overrated in the league is… well, you get it,” one wrote.

“Lol chanting ‘overrated’ at Wemby is a dangerous game that he won’t forget,” another added.

“Stupid a** fans in MSG chanting ‘overrated’ to Wemby. I hope y’all remember this when he brings this up during free agency one day,” a third said.

“Knicks fans going to regret that overrated chant when Wemby is winning championships in the future and their sorry-a** franchise still going be ringless since the 1970s,” one wrote.

Wembanyama might have provoked the Knicks fans with his pregame remarks about MSG.

Asked about his impression of the fabled arena before the clash, the Frenchman said it was “incredible” but “not as big as I expected.”

“But still, the vibe is here,” he added.

Wembanyama finished the night with 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and a block.

He went 4-for-14 from the field (28.6%) and missed all four of his 3-point attempts.

But the poor showing at MSG hardly takes away from his stunning start to his NBA career.

The Spurs star averaged 20.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.2 blocks in his first five games, putting up numbers unseen since Shaquille O’Neal as a rookie.
