SDCC 2024: The Boys Stars & Eric Kripke Reflect On An Epic Season 4

The Boys season 4 is quite the wild ride. There are unexpected deaths, big power plays, and a whole lot of bloody action and bad language. Hughie (Jack Quaid) went through a rough time this season from the loss of his father, to being assaulted and manipulated. With Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) now out of the picture, Homelander (Antony Starr) working with the new President, and Butcher (Karl Urban) showing off his new superpowers, anything can happen.

Creator Eric Kripke has said from the beginning that his plan was to make five seasons of The Boys, and that is what he is sticking to. With the final season looming, who knows how the story will shake out. Gen V, the popular spin-off, bleeds over in terms of story lines and characters, keeping things interesting. A new spin-off, Vought Rising, was announced at SDCC 2024.

Screen Rant caught up with the cast of The Boys at San Diego Comic-Con to talk all about the beloved franchise. They reflect on the events of the fourth season, including some of their favorite moments. The cast also reveals where they would like to see their character go in the upcoming fifth and final season of The Boys.

Tomer Capone Says Kimiko & Frenchie’s Relationship Is The “Most Beautiful Cinematic” Thing The Boys Has Don

Screen Rant: How did it feel when you read that scene where Frenchie and Kimiko kiss at the end of the final episode of The Boys season 4? Maybe it’ll all end up well, but it probably won’t.

Tomer Capone: I’m just as cliff-hanged as you guys are, what’s going to happen next? But it had to happen. It had to happen. Glad. I thought it was one of the most beautiful cinematic things we have ever done in the show. And come on, we have animatronic whales and penises and whatnot. But this thing, this romantic, quiet, intimate thing. Sometimes me and Karen catch ourselves during filming and we go like, “Is this The Boys or…?” The dance sequence we had, you remember that one?

Or that kiss sequence. You look around and all the crew is like this. Everybody’s like, “oOh, you guys, is this The Boys?” I mean, there’s no blood around. But it was fun. It was fun. It was really Eric to think [about] what the fans wanted, which also makes the show what it is. It’s a symbiotic relationship now.

Chace Crawford Laughed When He Read About Ambrosius’ Death In The Script

Screen Rant: I felt bad for Ambrosius that the Deep just let her die, and essentially chose Sister Sage over her. What was your reaction when you read that scene in the script, with her gurgling behind you?

Chace Crawford: I laughed so hard when I read the script. I laughed so hard when I saw it. I laughed so hard. So yeah, it was actually hard not to laugh shooting it because it was so absurd. But I also wanted it to be a real big blowout fight, like a marriage story fight. So yeah, it was really great. That was my favorite scene to shoot.

The only real connection he has emotionally was to sea life, to Ambrosius, which is, but he was so excited to have someone acknowledge him. Sage knew exactly what she was doing. But yeah, she acknowledged him as a human being and kind of flirted with them, and the Deep is a sucker for that kind of thing, unfortunately.

Claudia Doumit’s Final Day On The Boys Season 4 Set Was “Relaxing”

Screen Rant: What was your initial reaction when you found out Victoria Neuman was going to die this season?

Claudia Doumit: It’s such a weird response, but I was like, oh, about time. I thought she was going to die sooner. I thought she was going to die end of season two, when she comes in. I thought she was going to die in season three. So when I kept living, I was just kind of stoked.

Screen Rant: What was that day of filming like?

Claudia Doumit: Again, a really odd answer. It was a really relaxing day for me. It was the last day on set so I was really just running around giving everyone their wrap gifts and going from department to department and taking photos. So I was having a really fun day, and then they called me in, and they rigged me up and told me to move around a bunch, and then they laid me in some fake blood, and they were like, now just put your eyes in the back of your head, and you’re dead. So it was fun.

Karen Fukuhara Has Shipped Kimiko & Frenchie From The Start

Screen Rant: I have got to ask you about the kiss, because that’s one of my favorite moments, when you just go on your tiptoes. How did it feel to know that was finally going to happen?

Karen Fukuhara: It honestly was the best. I’ve been shipping Kimchi from day one, but I didn’t want to say anything because I feel like I’ve been told by one of the writers that if you talk about what you want to happen, it’s not going to happen because it’s too predictable. And so every time I’ve been asked, I’ve been like, I don’t know, but I’ve been shipping Kimchi from the beginning.

Valorie Curry Wants Firecracker To Die In The Boys Season 5

Screen Rant: Where do you hope to see Firecracker go in the final season?

Valerie Curry: I mean, I hope to see her dead. She has it coming from any number of people, but I’m really curious to see how Firecracker behaves from a place of desperation now that she realizes that she has very good reason to be afraid of Homelander. She realizes that she is as much a prisoner as she is empowered by Vought. It’s something she can’t get out alive now, and she knows that.

And this is somebody who, this character, you never know what she’s going to do next. That’s one thing you can count on with Firecracker is you have no idea what she will do next. And if season four was seeing her acting from a relatively empowered place, what does season five look like when even though ostensibly, she’s empowered, I think actually there’s a lot more desperation in it.

Eric Kripke Says Hughie Needed The Boys Season 4 Arc

Screen Rant: Do you feel bad about what you did to Hughie this season?

Eric Kripke: Hughie went through a lot. He had to go through a real crucible because the story we were trying to tell, and I know and the fans had some very legitimate responses, but the story we were trying to tell is it’s really hard to hold onto your humanity and your morals in the real world, and to be able to keep getting up every time you’re knocked down, and that Hughie was able to get to the end of the season as a good person, to me is the most heroic story of the finale and the season.

And there’s another season to go. You have to, when you’re basically at the end of act two of your movie, it’s your darkest point, and then there’s a whole other season for him to rise to victory, which I could say that spoiler that he’s going to do.

The Boys is a superhero/dark comedy satire series created by Eric Kripke based on the comic series of the same name. Set in a “what-if” world that reveres superheroes as celebrities and gods who experience minimal repercussions for their actions. However, one group of vigilantes headed by a vengeance-obsessed man named Billy Butcher will fight back against these super-charged “heroes” to expose them for what they are.
