Even though the Bridgerton season is officially over and fans are left to reflect on Polin’s fairytale love story, the eagerness for more period romance is far from gone. In fact, with another 2 years to go until the next season, Bridgerton fans are more than excited to see something new.
My Lady Jane is the perfect Bridgerton replacement for those who don’t care much for historical accuracy, but enjoy the aesthetics of period romance, good acting, and suspenseful plot twists. Here’s everything you need to know before watching the show.
Is My Lady Jane Worth Watching?
The show, which now has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on June 27 and quickly caught the attention of period drama fans everywhere. The twist is that it’s not just the period piece we’re all used to. If anything, My Lady Jane rivals Bridgerton in breaking all the rules of the genre.
My Lady Jane follows Lady Jane Grey, a cousin in the line of succession to Edward VI, who is forced by her family to marry Lord Guildford Dudley. However, the 16th century England of the series is not the same as we know it from history books, as humans share the world with Ethians who can take animal form.
In just 8 episodes, My Lady Jane manages to break all the rules that period drama has set over the years. It introduces the fantasy and thriller elements, but doesn’t shy away from the romantic implications of the genre.
In just one season, there are several burning romances, the fantasy mystery, and a whole bunch of subplots that don’t seem to take anything away from the charismatic lead and her journey. Adapted by Gemma Burgess from a novel by Cynthia Hand, My Lady Jane is the perfect binge-watch for those itching for more dynamic period romance after Bridgerton.
The door for season 2 was left wide open after the season 1 finale, but Prime Video has yet to make a decision on renewal. Given the positive reviews and the ever-growing number of people who are getting into and obsessed with the show, a second season should be a no-brainer, but with no official confirmation, My Lady Jane is left hanging.
If you are interested in the show and feel that the story of Lady Jane Grey is right up your alley, you can contribute to the show’s success by streaming it on Amazon Prime Video today.
