The Boys has elevated the profile of showrunner Eric Kripke as the head of one of the most buzzed-about, most-watched shows in the streaming era, though he is not forgetting where he came from, the long, long-running Supernatural.

He’s already reached into that era of his career twice for major character additions to The Boys’ universe (and many minor ones). In season 3 it was Dean Winchester, Jensen Ackles playing Soldier Boy. This season it’s John Winchester, Jeffrey Dean Morgan playing Kessler. Now, you guessed it, Sam Winchester, Jared Padalecki who appears to be stepping up to the plate.

“He’s been busy the last few years, so schedules haven’t worked out,” Kripke said. “But now, unfortunately, [Walker] got cancelled — but the good thing is he’s free, and I feel like I have to complete my game of Supernatural Pokémon and I have my one big one — very big one — left to catch.“

“We have talked [about a role]. As a matter of fact, we talked today,” he said. “I think at this point in my acting life, I only want to work on projects that I really care about or with people that I really care about, and obviously Eric and I are indelibly connected forever.”

There’s no word on what role Padalecki might play, and how major or minor it might be. Soldier Boy was a huge part in season 3, though Morgan’s Kessler seems less high profile. However, Kripke has talked about the idea of an entire spin-off for Kessler:

“Hey, man, if Jeffrey wants to do it, and it works out, who wouldn’t want a Jeffrey Dean Boys spinoff?”

And Morgan said “sign me up” almost immediately, though we don’t know if anything is actually in the works.

Past Padalecki’s addition, will we see Misha Collins? Mark Sheppard? There have already been a number of other Supernatural actors in smaller parts on the show, so this will likely continue indefinitely. Jim Beaver is Robert Singer, for instance, sharing a name with his Supernatural character.

Anyway, if I was a showrunner who got blasted into the streaming A-list like this, I would absolutely hope that I’d be showering all my old friends with roles. I’m really looking forward to seeing who Padalecki might be, and who might be added later. My money is on Collins.
