It took a long while for The Boys to finally bring Jeffrey Dean Morgan on board, but it looks like the Walking Dead alum isn’t planning on going anywhere now he had joined the Prime Video series. In a recent exchange on X/Twitter, Morgan shared an image of a Deadline interview with The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, which suggested that his new character of CIA officer Joe Kessler could be in line for a spin-off if Morgan was interested.
Last week it was revealed that Season 5 of The Boys will be the final season and will bring the flagship series to a close. However, Kripke did mention at the time that he wants to develop some new spin-off shows, so the timing of Morgan’s post does imply that a Kessler spin-off could be one of the first new projected to be put into development. In his post, Morgan responded to Kripke’s original interview by saying:
Ha!! Kripke!!! Don’t you play with my emotions! You know i’m in. Sign me the hell up! (checking schedule right now!)

Kripke later reposted Morgan’s message, and Morgan himself replied to several fans reiterating his need to clear his schedule to make sure that he can do something else within The Boys universe. There is obviously a long way to go before this happens, but after fans have demanded Morgan’s inclusion in the franchise for a long time, this is one spin-off that seems to be a no-brainer road to success.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan Can Make Himself a New Home with The Boys
Jeffrey Dean Morgan has become a firm fan-favorite in some dark fantasy and horror dramas over the last two decades. From his appearance as John Winchester in the original seasons of Supernatural, to his Walking Dead role as Negan, Morgan’s ability to enthrall and audience has helped to bolster viewership on his previous shows on multiple occasions.
Now, the actor could do it all over again in The Boys. Having stuck with The Walking Dead until it’s conclusion, only to then become part of the first spin-off show, Dead City, Morgan has proven that he is very committed to the franchises he chooses to dip into. Although he is still very much a part of The Walking Dead, the reduced episode numbers of Dead City could make it much easier for him to dedicate time develop Joe Kessler in his own series with Kripke.
Two of television’s biggest series are returning just days apart, with The Boys season 4 and House of the Dragon season two both premiering in the middle of June. The two shows took off in 2023, but now it is time to see which streaming series will come out on top. Are you most excited for another entry in the R-rated raunchy superhero series or the next chapter in the story of Westeros? Which series is the top priority on your watchlist?
It is apparent that this spin-off is not imminent, if it does go ahead, but just the back and forth between Kripke and Morgan has been enough to stoke up fans at the possibility of it happening in the future. Morgan’s involvement in Season 4 of The Boys has only just begun, with the first three episodes having been released so far. While audience reviews for the new season have not been anywhere near as high as previous seasons, there have been suggestions of the show being review bombed with very vague, negative reviews. In contrast, critics have continued to be mostly positive about the series. Whatever the reasons for the negativity, Kripke’s adamant attitude towards ending the series after Season 5 could be exactly what is needed to keep the show’s legacy intact.
