Robert Downey Jr. to come back to Marvel

Looks like Robert Downey Jr. is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actor is set to appear on the next two Avengers movies but not as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Marvel fans all over the world said goodbye to his beloved Marvel characters in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. He died after trying to take down Thanos and his army.

During San Diego ComicCon on Saturday, July 27, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige gave fans a look at what the next few years in the MCU will look like. Many masked people in olive green suits were on stage, but one stood out wearing a different shade of green. When they unmasked, it was Robert.

It was revealed Robert will portray the villain Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom in the next two Avengers movies: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The crowd went nuts, as displayed in videos fans posted to social media when the news was announced.

Robert then posted on Instagram a video of the unveil but also a picture of him holding the mask in front of his face. In the caption, the actor wrote: “New mask, same task.”

Fans under the comments were happy to see their favorite Avenger back but confused with his new role. One person wrote: “This feels like Micheal Jordan joining the Washington wizards lol you forever Tony.” Another person wrote: “WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.” A third person wrote: “ROBERTO YOU’VE MADE ME SCREAM ALL OVER MY HOUSE. THE KING HAS RETURNED. THANKS MARVEL”

Others were less excited, stating that they felt he didn’t fit the role. One wrote: “I’m so pissed off and in shock right now. How can they turn my Superhero into a super villain. This is so not right. I need time to accept this.” Another penned: “Marvel getting desperate now,” while a third added: “I have a hard time seeing RDJ as Doom, it’ll be too weird imo…”

It was also confirmed that directors Anthony and Joe Russo are to return to the franchise to direct Doomsday. Before the reveal, the Russo brothers said that “there is one very important character required to do Secret Wars justice.” They said they needed “the greatest actor in the world” to play Doctor Doom.
