‘Super F—ing Excited’: Jeffrey Dean Morgan Teases The Boys Character’s Devilish Quest

Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan is ready for his The Boys debut, even if he still won’t say who he’s playing.

Morgan appeared in an exclusive IGN Live video discussing his upcoming role in the Prime Video superhero satire’s fourth season, albeit in a heavily censored format. He said, “A lot of people have been asking me, ‘Jeff, tell us about the role you’re doing on this show.’ I’m playing a guy named [censored]. Me and Butcher, they go way back. They’re old buddies from their days doing some real [censored] at this [censored].” The Walking Dead star also teased Butcher having a few months left to live, causing Morgan’s mystery character “to take him on one last [censored] full of… diabolical [censored],” though from that point on, his clip became increasingly and comedically more censored regarding what Morgan could or could not disclose.

Butcher’s condition, a result of him continually using Compound V to fight Homelander in season 3, was recently discovered by Homelander himself in a new clip, further setting up both men’s attempts to influence Ryan Butcher’s (Cameron Crovetti) morality. The Seven leader will serve once again as The Boys‘ primary antagonist this season, going on trial for the murder of a Starlight supporter and pushing the Seven to behave more like “wrathful gods” than superheroes for the public. Per Homelander actor Antony Starr, this mindset — along with his parental approach toward Ryan — reflects “a desperate need for connection and all that. But really this season, if you look at it through one lens, it’s very selfishly about legacy and what he wants his son to be. And it’s a very controlling way; his parenting is quite controlling as much.”

Morgan’s Character and Butcher are Two Peas in a Diabolical Pod

While it’s still unclear how Morgan ties into Butcher’s past, the duo received their own season 4 promotional poster together, describing both as “Two peas in a diabolical pod.” Along with Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, Morgan is the second major Supernatural actor to appear in showrunner Eric Kripke’s series, though Kripke recently teased the possibility of co-star Jared Padalecki joining them following his CW show Walker‘s cancelation.

Since its release, The Boys‘ success has resulted in multiple spinoffs, including the animated anthology series The Boys Presents: Diabolical and the college drama Gen V. Another spinoff, The Boys: Mexico — written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and co-produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna — was greenlit last year, while Gen V — despite losing one of its main actors, Chance Perdomo, earlier this year — is currently filming its second season.

The Boys season 4 premieres on Prime Video on June 13.
