Richard Kay, a close confidant of the late Princess Diana, expressed that she would be devastated to witness the deepening rift between her two sons. As an editor at the Daily Mail, Mr. Kay had frequent conversations with Princess Diana, sometimes speaking to her up to six times a day. On the Mail’s Palace Confidential programme, he revealed that the two princes are “battling over their mother’s legacy.”

The expert emphasized that if Princess Diana were still alive, she would be the only one capable of mending the conflict between William and Harry.

“They’ve torn apart Diana’s legacy, divided it between themselves, and each took what suited them best. It’s a profound tragedy,” the royal expert lamented. “Diana’s love for her sons was undeniable, evident to the world; she adored those boys. I believe she would be heartbroken.”

Mr. Kay also stated that Princess Diana would be incredibly proud of Prince William and Kate Middleton for stepping into the roles of Prince and Princess of Wales, following in their parents’ footsteps. He added, “She would be proud of William and Catherine for the graceful image they’ve crafted and the seamless way they’ve taken on the legacy of her and Charles.”

The relationship between the two princes has grown increasingly strained since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals in 2020. In his memoir *Spare*, Harry described William as his “frenemy” and admitted they were always “competing” with each other. Harry also shared details about their intense arguments.

The rift reportedly began when William advised his brother to “slow down” when Harry first started dating Meghan Markle in 2017. Since then, the brothers have rarely been seen together. During a brief visit to the UK in May, the Prince of Wales didn’t even meet with his brother. Mr. Kay believes that Princess Diana, who tragically died in a Paris car crash in 1997, would be “incredibly envious” that Harry managed to “break free” from the British royal family. “Diana was a radical, deeply unhappy and trapped within the royal system. She tried to escape but couldn’t before her death. I think she would be immensely proud of Harry for choosing a life outside the royal circle,” Kay concluded.
