Marvel Just Revealed How Old Scarlet Witch Was When She Died & It Makes Wanda’s Story Even More Tragic

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episodes 1 & 2

Marvel confirms how old Scarlet Witch was when she died in the MCU through Agatha All Along, and it makes her story all the more heartbreaking. Picking up three years after the ending of WandaVisionAgatha All Along episode 1 sees Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) trapped in a spell mimicking a true crime show like Mare of Easttown, wherein she’s a police detective tasked with solving the murder of an unidentified woman. It becomes increasingly clear that the dead body belongs to Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch, until it’s finally confirmed by the toe tag in the morgue.

Agatha All Along is the first in-universe confirmation that Scarlet Witch died at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when she destroyed the Darkhold across the multiverse and brought down Mount Wundagore. Since Wanda died off-screen, there was some doubt about her fate, but that’s been put to rest now that Agatha All Along confirmed Scarlet Witch is really dead. And now we know how old she was when she sacrificed herself.

Scarlet Witch Was In Her Late 20s When She Died

In Agatha All Along episode 1, when Agatha goes to the Westview morgue to prove that she didn’t imagine the dead body in her case, and finds nothing there, she lists off the unidentified woman’s characteristics to herself, making the body reappear. Agatha says, “She was in her late 20s, green eyes, 5’7″. Hair the color of… Scarlet.” This description, coupled with the later confirmation that the dead body is, in fact, Wanda Maximoff, reveals Scarlet Witch’s approximate age when she died in Multiverse of Madness.

Wanda Suffered So Many Tragedies And They’re Made Worse By How Young She Was

Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) has suffered a great deal of tragedy since her debut in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it took a particular turn during 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War when she had to kill the person she loved, Vision, in order to try to defeat Thanos – only to fail. The trauma she experienced, and the fallout of it, was explored in WandaVision, delving deep into the loss her character has felt. When she had to give up her children, she turned to dark magic, and ultimately killed herself to protect the multiverse.

The fact that Scarlet Witch wasn’t even 30 years old by the time she died makes Wanda’s tragic life all the more heartbreaking because she suffered so much in such a short amount of time, and at such a young age. The Marvel universe is filled with plenty of tragic tales and unfortunate endings for characters, but it’s safe to say that Scarlet Witch’s MCU story is among the most gut-wrenching. So much so, that we can only hope it’s not over yet.

There has been speculation that Agatha All Along will either resurrect Scarlet Witch or otherwise set up her MCU return. If that’s the case, Marvel has the opportunity to give Wanda a chance at true redemption. While her moment of sacrifice showed she was a hero in the end, it would be much more satisfying to see her back in the MCU and fighting alongside the Avengers once again. If she was in her late 20s when she died, that means Scarlet Witch had much more life to live, and hopefully she’ll return to continue living either in Agatha All Along or another MCU release.
