Thunderbolts* Star Gives Promising Update About The MCU Movie 11 Months Before Its Release

A star from Thunderbolts* comments on what fans can expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, with a franchise criticism not impacting the film. The cast of Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* is quite impressive, featuring the return of fan-favorite MCU characters and underrated players who could grow in the franchise. Beyond its star-studded cast, Thunderbolts* looks to be an exciting MCU entry due to the movie feeling fresh in relation to other projects in the franchise in a couple of major ways.

Speaking to The New York TimesJulia Louis-Dreyfus commented on how Thunderbolts* is “trying to stay away from as much C.G.I. or whatever as possible.” Louis-Dreyfus plays Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in the MCU. The character is the one responsible for assembling the Thunderbolts, as Valentina was seen recruiting members for the team across multiple MCU movies and series. The star said that with the upcoming MCU film, the studio is focusing on a “human story” rather than the CGI spectacle expected from Marvel projects. Check out the full quote below:

It’s very well organized. Very methodical. And I don’t mean that in a negative way. Particularly on this film, they’re very much focused on, frankly, the human story, believe it or not. They’re trying to sort of go back to their roots, as it were. And so there’s a lot of focus on that. They’re trying to stay away from as much C.G.I. or whatever as possible, so that the stunts are, like, everywhere. And in fact, I had to do a couple.

Well, I’m making this out to sound like I’m flying through the air like Captain America or whatever, but I’m not. It’s just a very, very, very, very brief stunt.

Why Thunderbolts* Is A Perfect MCU Movie To Have Less CGI

The Film Has An Impressive Character Roster

Official reveal of the cast for Thunderbolts in MCU concept art

Thunderbolts* is an exciting project for the MCU, coming at a time when the franchise needs more team-ups, as several new characters have been introduced and many players have gone years without appearing. The movie includes characters like U.S. Agent, Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, and more. Something that has drawn attention is the fact that many of the MCU’s Thunderbolts members are either super soldiers or hand-to-hand fighters.

While that brings less variety to the team, it can help Thunderbolts* avoid recent MCU criticism. The shared universe has had issues with VFX in recent years, with some projects getting criticized for their heavy use of CGI. Thanks to how Thunderbolts*‘s roster is mostly made up of grounded heroes, power-wise, the MCU film does not have to employ a huge level of VFX for its main characters.

Thunderbolts* will be the MCU’s version of the Suicide Squad in a way. The film looks to be a grounded story with plenty of exciting action and intrigue. More visceral hand-to-hand fights should work wonders for the movie. That said, Thunderbolts* will still have plenty of CGI-led spectacle that MCU fans have come to expect, as Lewis Pullman will debut as Sentry, one of Marvel’s Superman-like heroes. With a focus on practical stunts without losing formidable CGI fights, Thunderbolts* could be one of the MCU’s best-balanced films in years.
