Kit Harington Candidly Addresses His Marvel Role 3 Years After His Last Appearance

Kit Harrington's Dane Whitman considering picking up the Ebony Blade in Eternals

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington discusses his Marvel Cinematic Universe role nearly three years after his debut. One of the newest additions to the MCU in Phase 4 was the introduction of the Eternals characters, exploring a very different corner of the franchise. However, with mixed box office results as well as struggling with critics, the MCU timeline has yet to move forward with that film after 2021, leaving many unanswered Eternals questions by the audience.

In a new GQ profile piece, Harington spoke briefly about his MCU gig with Eternals and why he took the job to begin with, as Dane Whitman has yet to come back. Harington opened up about the opportunity, sharing the following:

I’m not gonna pretend I took that [role] because it was different and interesting. If Marvel calls, you gotta do it.

Where Black Knight Is Most Likely To Return In The MCU Timeline

Kit Harington as Dane Whitman in Eternals

The ending of Eternals had initially set Dane up for his next MCU adventure as he encountered Mahershala Ali’s Blade, who made a voice cameo, suggesting that he would join the upcoming reboot. In earlier drafts of the Blade script, Harington was said to be showing up in the film and expand on his role as the Black Knight. As of right now, as the Blade movie reboot is being retooled, it doesn’t appear that Dane is part of it.

However, it wouldn’t be shocking if Black Knight sadly becomes one of the characters who doesn’t get fully realized for future MCU movies and TV shows. As the MCU has been scaling back with its releases in order to ensure the quality of its products, Marvel Studios may simply not have a place for Dane as of right now. Since none of the Eternals characters are being eyed to come back anytime soon, it would make sense if Dane is benched for the time being.

Even if Harington doesn’t come back to the MCU timeline, the Eternals serves as a valuable lesson for Marvel Studios to be very careful when they are considering bringing in major new characters into the franchise. While there is always the chance that they will be part of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers. Secret Wars, time will tell if Marvel Studios is even willing to go that far with them. For now, the world will have to wait and see if the MCU will ever flesh out Black Knight’s place in the franchise.
