One major theory regarding Marvel Studios’ upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series may have just been confirmed ahead of the show’s 2025 premiere. The release of Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again is one of the most anticipated events coming up in the MCU, especially following a massive creative overhaul that created stronger connections to Netflix’s popular Daredevil series. Several recent MCU projects have been laying the foundations for Born Again, hinting at an epic Marvel Comics storyline being adapted for the series, and this may have just been confirmed.
Speaking on The Official Marvel Podcast on July 3, 2024, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum opened up about the future of the MCU’s TV shows. While talking about Daredevil: Born Again, Winderbaum notes that Born Again is a revival of Daredevil, similarly to X-Men ’97, but “things have changed,” as the battle between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk is no longer just them trying to kill each other. Instead, Winderbaum’s suggestion that “there’s a whole game of politics at play,” hints at Kingpin’s rise to Mayor, teasing an adaptation of Marvel Comics’ expansive Devil’s Reign storyline.
Well, Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97 because it’s reviving something that the fans love, but it is taking it in a new direction. These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society has changed. Matt [Murdock] and Wilson [Fisk] have changed, and their characters are going to collide in ways we’ve never seen before. It’s no longer enough to try to murder each other. There’s a whole game of politics at play.
Why Kingpin’s Mayoral Campaign Is The Best Storyline For Daredevil: Born Again
The post-credits scene of Echo provided the MCU’s first major hint at Wilson Fisk hoping to run for the position of Mayor of New York, setting up this fantastic Marvel Comics story for Daredevil: Born Again, and perhaps a number of other street-level projects. This could become one of the MCU’s largest plots ever, as Mayor Fisk outlaws vigilantism in New York in Marvel’s Devil’s Reign event. This impacts a huge number of heroes, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Captain America, and Moon Knight, but Daredevil most of all.
Daredevil: Born Again has been said to have bigger stakes than Netflix’s Daredevil series, and adapting Devil’s Reign fits the bill perfectly. This will not only cause huge problems for Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and his career as Daredevil, but could also bring several other MCU heroes into Daredevil: Born Again, further cementing the series as a bona fide part of the MCU’s continuity. This is a great way for Matt Murdock to meet other heroes, setting him up for bigger storylines and appearances in future projects, including Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars in Phase 6.
Adapting Devil’s Reign would also establish Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin as a huge villain in the MCU, perhaps even bigger than Thanos, as he would drill away at the world’s superheroes slowly, rather than in one fell swoop. Kingpin uses Thunderbolts units to police his laws in Devil’s Reign, so just as Daredevil: Born Again could introduce Daredevil to new heroes, Kingpin could come into contact with many powerful villains. Following Brad Winderbaum’s comments, Daredevil: Born Again may be one of the most important and wide-reaching new projects in the MCU’s future.
