Safe Yet Shocking: 8 Advance on ‘Idol’—But 2 Eliminations Ignite Fan Outrage and Fierce Debate!

What a night it was on American Idol as the Top 10 contestants took on the music of iconic women, all under the mentorship of country legend Miranda Lambert. From powerhouse ballads to emotional showstoppers, the stage was packed with unforgettable performances—and a few surprises that had fans buzzing.

As if the night wasn’t already packed with enough talent, Season 22 winner Abi Carter returned for the TV debut of her stunning new single, “Burned,” reminding everyone why she walked away with last year’s crown.

But it wouldn’t be Idol without some heartbreak. With over 22 million votes cast, two contestants were sent home. Here’s how the evening played out:

John Foster — SAFE

Usually calm and collected, John melted into a puddle of nerves when meeting his mentor—and longtime crush—Miranda Lambert. But once on stage, he shook it off and delivered a charismatic take on Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About.” While some felt it leaned more toward karaoke than concert, his energy and audience engagement sealed his spot in the Top 8.

Kolbi Jordan — ELIMINATED

Kolbi took a bold swing by choosing Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” over the expected diva ballads, and it paid off artistically. Her performance was dark, dynamic, and full of stage presence. Sadly, it wasn’t enough to secure the votes, and Kolbi’s Idol journey came to an unexpected end.

Josh King — SAFE

Who adds harmonica to Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”? Josh King does—and somehow, it worked. His creative risk paid off with a raw, gritty performance full of fire and soul. He brought something fresh and unforgettable to a song we’ve all heard a thousand times.

Breanna Nix — SAFE

Breanna strutted across the stage like she owned it, nailing Adele’s “Water Under the Bridge” with a voice full of control and confidence. She looked and sounded like a rising star, and this performance might just be her breakout moment in the competition.

Canaan James Hill — ELIMINATED

Canaan turned to Carrie Underwood’s “Love Wins” to show a different side of himself. He leaned into its gospel message after Miranda encouraged him to deliver it with emotional depth. While heartfelt, the performance didn’t quite hit the high marks we’ve come to expect. Luke Bryan’s comment—“You got through it, baby!”—said it all. And just like that, Canaan was sent home.

Thunderstorm Artis — SAFE

Thunderstorm proved once again why he’s one of the season’s most compelling performers. His rendition of Adele’s “When We Were Young” was haunting and soulful, with falsetto moments that sent chills. Add piano-playing to his ever-growing list of skills—this guy is a full-package artist.

Slater Nalley — SAFE

In true Slater fashion, he zigged when we thought he’d zag, taking on Reba McEntire’s emotional ballad “Whoever’s in New England.” With his signature growl and depth, he turned in a performance that was both tender and rugged. Slater continues to be one of the show’s most authentic voices.

Jamal Roberts — SAFE

Taking on Carrie Underwood’s fiery “Undo It,” Jamal let his inner rockstar loose. It was a bold and energetic performance that felt like a musical joyride. Though he tripped over a lyric, his high-octane delivery and stage presence overshadowed the slip.

Mattie Pruitt — SAFE

Mattie poured her heart out in Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me,” performing it with just her guitar—exactly how she first learned it. By the end, both Mattie and Miranda were in tears. It was raw, emotional, and deeply personal—a true artist’s moment.

Gabby Samone — SAFE

Saving the best for last, Gabby closed the show with Beyoncé’s anthem “I Was Here.” Her vocals soared, and the emotion behind every word mirrored her journey through the competition. It was stunning, heartfelt, and powerful enough to make even Queen Bey proud.

The Final Verdict
Eliminated: Kolbi Jordan and Canaan James Hill
Safe and Moving Forward: John Foster, Josh King, Breanna Nix, Thunderstorm Artis, Slater Nalley, Jamal Roberts, Mattie Pruitt, Gabby Samone

As the competition heads into its final stretch, the Top 8 are proving that this season is packed with talent, personality, and plenty of surprises. With every performance counting more than ever, the next elimination could be anyone’s game.
