Superman’s Movie Trailer Just Broke An 18-Year-Old DC Film Record I’m Glad To See End

The first trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman has confirmed that the highly-anticipated reboot will break a surprising DC movie pattern, revisiting an iconic location from DC Comics that we haven’t seen properly on the big-screen in 18 years. Superman was first announced to be in development at the beginning of 2023, set to spearhead James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new live-action DC Universe. David Corenswet showed how great his Man of Steel will be in a new trailer for Superman that revealed more about the 2025 movie’s narrative.

One of the most exciting elements of Superman’s first trailer was that we caught a glimpse of the vibrant new world that Gunn and Safran have created for their new franchise. Not only did we get shown notable locations such as the Daily Planet building and LuthorCorp, but the Superman trailer also provided a first-look at the DCU’s new Fortress of Solitude. This is a hugely important place in the evolution of Superman, as he learned of his Krytonian heritage and purpose on Earth in the Fortress of Solitude, so seeing it again in 2025’s Superman is very exciting.

The Fortress Of Solitude Was Last Seen In A Movie In 2006

The Fortress Of Solitude Last Appeared On The Big-Screen In Superman Returns

The last time the Fortress of Solitude was properly seen in its full glory in a DC movie was 18-years-ago, back in 2006’s Superman Returns. Brandon Routh’s Man of Steel used the location as his base of operations after returning from his five-year hiatus, shortly after Lex Luthor steals Kryptonite crystals from the Fortress. Prior to Superman Returns, the Fortress of Solitude was a pivotal location during Christopher Reeve’s time as Superman, but the important setting has been ignored and neglected in the years since.

Henry Cavill’s Superman, who debuted in the DCEU’s first movie, 2013’s Man of Steel, received a butchered and heavily-altered version of the Fortress of Solitude, with the Kryptonian scout ship hardly being comparable to the giant crystalline and frozen structure. The Fortress of Solitude has also been seen in various TV shows, including Smallville, Superman & Lois and Krypton, but 2006’s Superman Returns was the last time a comic-accurate depiction of the Fortress of Solitude has been seen in a feature film. That is, until now.

What Role Will The Fortress Of Solitude Play In 2025’s Superman?

The first trailer for 2025’s Superman includes various scenes that show David Corenswet’s new Superman in the Fortress of Solitude. This new version of the Fortress seems to be incredibly comic-accurate, as huge ice crystals can be seen jutting from the ground to form the Fortress’ looming structure. The Fortress’ robot inhabitant, Kelex, also appears to have taken on a more comic-accurate appearance than the modernized versions in the DCEU, which proves how faithful James Gunn has been to the DC Comics source material, and highlights the lighter tone of the newly-rebooted franchise.

James Gunn’s Superman reboot is scheduled to premiere on July 11, 2025, and will be the first feature film in the new DCU, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, Clayface and more.

While little is known about what role the Fortress of Solitude will play in Superman, it seems that the location will be the site of a huge battle that would end with Kelex being injured. This could perhaps pit the new Man of Steel against Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor or even the Kaiju monster that he can be seen fighting in the movie’s first trailer. Whatever the case may be, the Fortress of Solitude’s reinvention in 2025’s Superman is great to see, particularly since we haven’t had a comic-accurate depiction of the iconic setting in almost two decades.
