While promoting her new Netflix movie, Carry-On, Sofia Carson addresses the possibility of a sequel to one of Netflix’s most talked-about romantic dramas of 2022. Following her breakthrough role in Disney’s Descendants movies and the viral success of her Netflix romance, Carson is becoming a prominent figure in the entertainment world. The multi-talented actor, known for her work as both a performer and a producer, is continuing to expand her career with dynamic new projects.
Carson’s latest venture is her role as Nora in Netflix’s new action-thriller, Carry-On, starring alongside Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman. Carson will also star in two upcoming Netflix projects: The Life List, based on the book of the same name by Lori Nelson Spielman, and My Oxford Year, also based on a novel of the same name by Julia Whelan. She also has a non-Netflix movie in the works, Last Night at The Lobster, directed by Wagner Moura. Even with so many upcoming projects, there are still questions about whether there will be a sequel to her controversial 2022 romance movie.
Sofia Carson Gives An Update On The Potential Purple Hearts Sequel
Discussions Are Underway
Carson, executive producer and star of Netflix’s Purple Hearts, has shared an intriguing update about the possibility of a sequel. Purple Hearts premiered in 2022 and became a smash hit for the streaming service, hooking audiences by following Cassie, a struggling singer, and Luke, a troubled Marine, who agree to marry solely for military benefits but later develop an unlikely romance when tragedy strikes. Despite its overwhelming success, spending six weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 and becoming the third most-watched movie of 2022, Purple Hearts also sparked debates about its portrayal of political and cultural themes, raising concerns about a potential sequel.
During an interview with Variety, Carson was asked about the potential for a Purple Hearts sequel, and if she was interested in making it happen. While the actor stopped short of confirming a follow-up, she reflected on the importance of the film and her character Cassie, and confirmed that, at least, conversations have happened. Read her comments below:
There are conversations. That’s all I’ll say.
I love Cassie, and I loved making this film, and I feel so passionate and so protective of it. So I’m very protective of how and if the sequel happens. But it’s extraordinary that I get asked so much about it. Even just that is a gift. I know fans really loved it.
What This Means For The Purple Hearts Sequel
Waiting For The Right Story
Carson’s protective stance on a potential sequel reflects her understanding of the film’s impact on its audience, and the importance of telling the right story. Purple Hearts is based on a 2017 standalone novel by the same name, written by Tess Wakefield, which leaves little room for a direct continuation without having to construct an entirely new narrative. This means that any sequel would have to be carefully thought-out in order to keep the emotional depth and authenticity that appealed to viewers, while also ensuring that it does not feel like an unnecessary addition.
However, the potential for a sequel also opens exciting new opportunities to delve deeper into Cassie and Luke’s evolving relationship. Purple Hearts left their story on a hopeful yet open-ended note, setting it up for further exploration. The potential sequel could explore their dynamic as they navigate life beyond the challenges of the first film, perhaps focusing on Cassie’s blossoming music career and Luke’s reintegration into civilian life. With audiences clamoring for a sequel, Carson’s approach shows a dedication to producing a sequel that builds on the heart of the original rather than capitalizing on its popularity alone.
