According to Reuters, Food and Drug Administration employees who were investigating the company were conveniently fired as part of a broader purge of federal employees.

Neuralink is a brain implant that is supposed to allow people to control other devices with their thoughts, which could theoretically help people with disabilities. The risks involved in such a procedure are enormous.

About two dozen people at the FDA’s office of neuroscience and physical medicine devices — some of whom were looking into Neuralink and its clinical trial applications — have been fired. They are also tasked with reviewing other companies currently developing brain-computer interface devices.

“This is a threat to the FDA experts who are overseeing Neuralink’s testing,” said Victor Krauthamer, a former FDA official who serves as acting director of the office that oversees human testing requirements for such brain devices.

“We should be concerned about the entire experiment and the protection of trial participants,” he added.
