Ahsoka didn’t require fans to do homework beforehand to enjoy the show.
Committed to long-interconnected franchises can sometimes be a chore for the viewers, especially when something is as big as the MCU. It also doesn’t help when newcomers are required to know about the entries that came before to enjoy a new show or movie. One major example is Madness of Multiverse, as fans, who weren’t familiar with the Wanda Vision beforehand, had a hard time piecing it all together in the sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange.
But Star Wars did combat this issue with Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka, as the showrunners succeeded in making it more accessible to fans, who had no knowledge about her history.
Dave Filoni Succeeded in Making Ahsoka Its Own Thing
Before getting her own live-action Disney Plus show, Ahsoka made her debut in the 2008 animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and subsequently appeared in Star Wars Rebels. So when it came to Rosario Dawson‘s show, showrunner Dave Filoni had a challenge to not only make the show appeal to her hardcore fans, who were aware of her history, but also to newcomers.
Lucasfilm head of development Carrie Beck shared that the Star Wars Rebels director spent a lot of time making it accessible to viewers, who lacked knowledge about the animated shows.
She told EW: But Dave was very thoughtful about crafting the narrative in a way that could invite people in. The show tells them everything they need to know along the way.
So it’s not surprising to see why it became a huge hit, as Ahsoka was completely its own thing, and fans of the show were always welcome to tune in with the animated shows that came before.
Deadpool & Wolverine Will Not Require Fans to Do Their Homework
After a tumultuous few years, the MCU is finally set to change its ways, with Disney CEO Bob Iger stressing they would commit to quality over quantity moving forward. Another major shift will be with Deadpool & Wolverine as Similar to Ahsoka, the threequel will not require fans to do their homework per director Shawn Levy. This isn’t to say the film isn’t geared toward the “fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters”, but fans from both sides can enjoy it.
He told The Associated Press: I was a good student in school. I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies. I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn’t want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research.
With the MCU getting bigger with each passing entry, fans will hope for more creators to follow in the footsteps of Ahsoka, making new entries more accessible to fans with no prior knowledge.
