Fans were quick to notice Jack and Mel’s dog was partially absent from season six

Virgin River fans were confused at the lack of scenes Jack and Mel’s dog Pony was involved in on season six of the hit Netflix show.

Pony was introduced at the end of the season five as a puppy, which Jack gave to Mel as a Christmas gift.

Although the golden Labrador was hardly seen throughout the season. But he did show up to walk down the aisle at his parents’ wedding for a few brief minutes in the season six finale.

However, this may be the last we see this version of Pony as according to the show’s boss a recasting is on the cards.

Virgin River’s producer Patrick Sean Smith, spoke out about Mel and Jacks dog after all the speculation about his whereabouts in the latest season of the show.

Speaking to US news outlet Deadline, Patrick said: “It turned out Pony wasn’t as prepared for the role before we cast Pony. And I say again, respectfully to the animal wranglers, they had the best of intentions.

Pony, I think, was maybe borderline feral when he started on set, and we learned that the hard way.”

kara on X: "jack got mel a dog named pony for christmas because she asked for a pony since she was 5 ☹️☹️ this is the sweetest thing ever https://t.co/xR0RZDlli6" / X

Despite being a puppy, the producer had stated that “Pony was completely out of control” and the reason for pulling Pony from the wedding scenes was to send him “back to acting school.”

When asked if Pony will return for the next season, Patrick had said the crew were “hoping to find a lookalike that’s prepared for what the role demands.”

One fan took to Reddit to express her opinion on Pony being written into the show, writing: “as a dog owner myself, when they first introduced a puppy in Season 5 when Jack surprised Mel with it, I was like, this is not going to end well…”

“It was an odd choice to add the dog to the show imo. They have enough characters to worry about to make them look realistic and the dog was just another layer of instability. Plus, neither Jack or Mel strike me as dog people even when they’re with the dog.”
