‘Give That Guy an Emmy Already’: The Boys Creator Praises Homelander Actor Antony Starr

The Boys Season 4 poster reveals a stoic Homelander

The Boys is among the most crude television shows that have ever been made, though it’s also been praised for the acting in its more dramatic scenes. One member of the ensemble cast who particularly shines is Antony Starr, and series showrunner Eric Kripke is wondering why the actor hasn’t gotten an Emmy.

In a new interview with Variety, Kripke commented on how the writing of the series has evolved based on what each actor brings to the table with their respective characters. This is something he’s applied to everyone, though he names Starr as Homelander as an example. Kripke observed how the unique facial expressions Starr is capable of has done a lot to really heighten the character’s scenes, so much so that the TV series creator can’t figure out why a Primetime Emmy Award nomination hasn’t happened yet.

“The short answer is all of them [have been changed],” he said. “I mean, one of the things I love most about television is your ability to evolve and adjust as dailies come in, and you can tailor the role. Once you see what the actor is comfortable with and what they excel at and where some of their blind spots are, you can really start playing to their strengths.”

“Give that guy an Emmy already. I don’t understand why it hasn’t happened yet.”

He added, “In Homelander’s example, Ant’s ability to give 16 facial expressions when another person gives one is just so astounding. Give that guy an Emmy already. I don’t understand why it hasn’t happened yet.”

Homelander confronts his reflections in The Boys

Homelander is very much meant to be the antagonist of the show, though Kripke has observed how some fans have been oddly rooting for the villain. It could be that Starr’s charisma and stellar performance in the role have contributed to some fans growing fond of the character, despite his atrocities. However, Kripke has been left scratching his head wondering why there are some fans who have gotten that message.

Eric Kripke Believes Homelander Supporters Are a Small Minority

“I have to believe that the ‘bad fans’ are a very small minority,” he said. “Because I don’t know how you root for Homelander. When the guy is slurping up breast milk, and being the weakest character in the show over and over and over again and being like — he’s not even particularly macho. He’s weird. He’s weird and thin-skinned, and I don’t know how you look at that guy and you’re like, ‘That’s my guy.’”

The Boys is streaming on Prime Video.
