Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr will return from the original – but what about Sarah Michelle Gellar?

1990s movie classic I Know What You Did Last Summer is getting another sequel treatment, starring Outer Banks‘ Madelyn Cline. The nostalgia is real – first Cruel Intentions gets a reboot, now this!

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr are set to return from the original movie, and co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar has sent waves through the fan community by posting on Instagram from the set.

She posted a picture of a director’s chair from the set, with the witty caption “Scooby Doo 3 coming soon”, referencing the other famous movie she appeared in with her now husband. Fans will know Sarah’s character was brutally murdered by the serial killer stalking a teen friendship group. But will she also make a return?

Well, it’s hard to say. The movie’s director (and friend of SMG) Jennifer Kaytin Robinson reposted Sarah’s story, saying: “before you dm me, she refuses to be not dead.”

When People asked Sarah if she was returning for the sequel, she responded “I am dead”. “My best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,” she said. “So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”

The original movie generated two sequels in the 1990s and Noughties, and now we’re returning to the I Know What You Did Last Summer world. Her’s everything else we know.

IMDB’s plot synopsis reads: “A group of friends is terrorised by a stalker who knows about a gruesome incident from their past.”

So the premise is quite similar to the earlier movies, which saw a group of young people grapple with a secret and a menacing stalker and serial killer who plans to make them pay for what they did. It’s not clear how the new cast will fit into the story from the previous movies, if at all, and what storylines the returning cast will have. Will Freddie Prinze Jr play the father of one of the younger cast? What will Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character arc be? We’ll have to wait and see.
