Fans of Netflix’s Outer Banks are particularly fascinated by the love life of its star, Madelyn Cline. Cline used to date her co-star on the show, Chase Stokes, who actually plays her love interest. However, it’s now been several years since the pair split up; they’ve remained friends and amicable co-workers. Cline has since had other loves.

In an interview with the Today Show in February 2023, Cline talked a bit about embracing privacy since her relationship with Stokes.

“Some people can do it,” she said of having a public love life. “[But] if you give everything, like, 100 percent of your energy, away, where’s the rest for yourself? You finally understand why people in the public eye keep their circles small.”

She continued, “I realized there are parts of my life that only me or one other person are entitled to. I prefer it that way. It also just makes things more special. That’s usually how relationships are.”

Here’s what is known about Cline’s relationships and her dating history so far.

Chase Stokes

Cline met Stokes in 2019 after they were both cast on Outer Banks as love interests Sarah Cameron and John Booker Routledge. They had actually appeared on the same show before, Stranger Things. Stokes told Life & Style in August 2021 that they never met on set there.

As imaginary romantic partners, Cline and Stokes had a lot of chemistry, and fans suspected there could be more between them offscreen. Then, in spring 2020, they started leaving public comments on each other’s Instagram accounts that seemed to confirm the rumors. In June 2020, Stokes shared a photo of them at the beach, making things Instagram official. He captioned the image, “cats outta the bag.”

In the comments, Cline wrote, “Topper punching the air rn,” then “I’ve fallen and I cant get up.”

In November 2020, she told Entertainment Tonight, “It’s really cool…It’s cool to share this experience with your favorite people and also your favorite person…I feel very happy.”

She continued, “I think because we were friends before this; we understood how we worked as individuals before we were seeing each other. We knew how we worked professionally, and we knew each other’s personal boundaries…As a rule, we never bring anything negative to set. If there’s a disagreement or a conversation that needs to be had that could potentially rain on the parade for that day, that’s never something that happens before work.”

A year later, the couple split up. A source told People in November 2021, “Madelyn and Chase are no longer together. They were trying to work things out privately but broke up a couple of months ago.”

Another source told Us Weekly that their “busy schedules” took a toll on the relationship.

“They’ve been trying to work it out for quite some time but decided going their separate ways was best,” the insider said. “They both have busy schedules, which made it hard for them to spend a lot of time together. They have no bad feelings toward each other and remain friends.”

Cline told Cosmopolitan in February 2023 that she and Stokes have continued to work well together even after breaking up.

“We always said that the job remains untouched,” she explained. “Nothing else, personal or negative, will touch the job. And while that’s not always easy, our job is to leave the show better than we found it, to leave the season better than we found it. And I’m really appreciative of that.”

Ross Butler

Toward the end of her relationship with Stokes, rumors circulated about actor Ross Butler and Cline. In September 2021, TMZ shared a video of the pair at a restaurant in Milan, enjoying a dance together during the city’s fashion week. In October 2021, Butler responded to questions from the publication by saying, “I dance with a lot of people. Just friends.”

In November of that year, he left a drooling face and a hot face emoji on photos of Cline from her photo shoot with the Hollywood Reporter. But it was never confirmed to be more than flirting.

Zack Bia

In December 2021, Us Weekly reported there were rumors Cline was dating DJ Zack Bia. They were photographed out together at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, California. Cline also celebrated her birthday with Bia at a Los Angeles Lakers Game.

“Madelyn and Zack have been spending a lot of time together,” a source told Us Weekly. “She’s playing coy about the status of her relationship with him, though.”

The insider continued, “They might seem like an odd match, but she’s someone who can get along with anybody because of how kind she is. They’re cute together.”

Bia appeared on the BFFs With Dave Portnoy and Josh Richards podcast in January 2022 and was asked about his relationship with Cline.

“We are not dating. We hang out all the time,” he said. “I think as someone like herself who is extremely busy and is going to start traveling—she’s on set five months out of the year—she has such a busy schedule, and I think I have such a busy schedule. It is one of those things where we really enjoy hanging out and enjoy going to dinner. But we never officially started dating and probably will never officially stop because we are just hanging out. We are enjoying it and not even thinking about what it is.”

In February 2022, Bia was connected to pop star Olivia Rodrigo, when a source told People that he invited her to a Super Bowl party.

Jackson Guthy

In July 2022, Cline was linked to the lead singer of North of Nine, Jackson Guthy. They were photographed on a date in Malibu, California. The relationship wasn’t confirmed until December 2022 when Cline did an interview with The Cut. The publication stated she shared a “Malibu home” with “her boyfriend and dogs.”

Guthy made things Instagram official in a Story of them together for her 25th birthday. In the February 2023 interview with Cosmopolitan, Cline said she had “never been happier.”

“I am happily taken. All I know is he makes me incredibly happy. And I’ve truly never been happier, and I feel very, very empowered,” she said. “Love is tight. And when you find something like that, you fight for that shit. And also, you fight to keep it yours, you know?”

In July 2023, Cline unfollowed Guthy on Instagram, sparking breakup rumors. They never spoke about their split, but in September 2023, she was linked to a new man.

Pete Davidson

That new man was Pete Davidson. Cline was linked to the Saturday Night Live alum in late September 2023 when they were seen grabbing breakfast at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She then went with him to Las Vegas where he was performing a stand up set.

A source told Us Weekly, “Madelyn and Pete have been dating for several weeks but have grown close fairly quickly.” They added the new couple “wanted to keep things under wraps” because “they assumed there would be a whole frenzy surrounding their relationship.”

They continued to be seen with one another for the next few months, but their last public appearance was in January 2024 in Philadelphia.

In September 2024, Cline told Bustle that they had actually split earlier that year. Cline said she would “rather not talk about their relationship.” The star was asked about what it was like to date someone so famous online, and Cline replied, “The jokes write themselves.”
