Prime Video’s Bridgerton Alternative With 93% Rotten Tomatoes Score Emerges as a Massive Streaming Success

Prime Video’s Bridgerton substitute My Lady Jane, which currently boasts a 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, has become a massive streaming success, joining the ranks of other new, popular shows that have come out recently. The period drama is set in the 16th century, following Lady Jane Grey as she’s forced to marry Lord Guildfor Dudley after her father’s death. However, the series comes with a twist on the genre, as the My Lady Jane cast includes humans, called Verities, and Ethians, people who can alter their form to become animals.

Now, Reelgood has revealed that My Lady Jane has taken the Number 4 spot in the Top 10 streaming shows for the week of June 27 through July 3, 2024. The series came in just under streaming originals like Hulu’s The Bear and Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, but performed better than popular shows like House of the Dragon and The Acolyte. In addition, it came in at the Number 6 spot for Top 10 streaming movies and shows overall that week, showing how much potential the fantasy Bridgerton substitute has.

Why My Lady Jane Is A Massive Success For Prime Video

My Lady Jane’s similarities to Bridgerton isn’t out of the ordinary, as streamers beyond Netflix have produced their own, similar period pieces since its success. One key example of this is Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers in 2023, which became enough of a hit to warrant a season 2 renewal the week after season 1 ended. The Prime Video period drama also has plenty of similarities to Netflix’s hit, including plenty of romantic drama and steamy love scenes between its core characters.

However, My Lady Jane differentiates itself by adding a fantasy twist to the story, the Ethians acting as a potent symbol of social disparities in the 1500s. While their addition helps bend the historical drama in a unique direction, their inclusion also helps the story tackle bigotry through a fantasy lens, aiding in giving the show a deeper meaning beyond its romance and historical reimaginings. It also keeps it from being too much like Bridgerton, allowing it to forge a different identity by blending genres together.

Given how much of an instant success the show has become, it wouldn’t be surprising if My Lady Jane season 2 were to be confirmed in the coming weeks. If it were to happen, then it could end up following an original story, as the book series it’s based on follows different characters named Jane with each new entry. However, with the show proving itself more popular than some of the biggest shows airing right now, it wouldn’t be surprising if a renewal were confirmed in the near future.
