While the royal family typically stays out of politics, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have urged Americans to get out and vote in the upcoming presidential election.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have gone against royal tradit
ion and voiced their opinion about the upcoming presidential election.
In the run-up to the election, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex issued a statement urging their fans to get out and vote. However, the pair stopped short of endorsing either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump.
It’s possible Harry and Meghan learned from a previous mistake as they caused anger among the foyal family during the last presidential election, according to reports. In September 2020, Harry and Meghan appeared in a video message and urged Americans to “vote against hate speech” in an apparent dig against Trump.
The video was broadcast as part of Time 100 magazine’s annual list of the top 100 most influential people. In the clip, Harry also explained how he had never voted during his time living in the UK.
Working royals in the UK usually refrain from commenting on politics or voting in elections. At the time, the video was released, sources told the Sunday Times that the remarks broke the Sandringham Summit agreement, which was written up when Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior royals in 2020.
The sources said members of the royal family were “wringing their hands” of the couple. “The feeling is it’s a violation of the agreement,” one source said.
During this election campaign, Harry and Meghan used their charitable organization the Archewell Foundation to share an urgent message as they encouraged unregistered voters to sign up ahead of polling day.
In a statement shared on the Archewell website, Harry and Meghan said: “Voting is not just a right; it’s a fundamental way to influence the fate of our communities. At The Archewell Foundation, we recognize that civic engagement, no matter one’s political party, is at the heart of a more just and equitable world.
“By participating in initiatives like this, we aim to amplify the message that every voice matters.” They continued: “We invite you to join us in this important effort. To volunteer your time and write letters to potential voters, sign up at Vote Forward’s website.
“For those who wish to take immediate action, you can register to vote today by visiting Vote.gov.” Meghan and Harry finished their powerful message by saying: “Together, let’s make sure every eligible voter is informed and empowered to participate in shaping America’s future.”
