The Mystery Behind ‘House of the Dragon’ Cast’s 2024 Emmy No-Show

There’s a good reason.

Regardless of where your loyalties lie in the Dance of the Dragons, don’t expect Team Green or Team Black to storm the Emmys tonight.

Although House of the Dragon season 2 finished its eight-episode run earlier this summer, no cast members are expected to represent the series during the ceremony. That isn’t because the show has lost all awards momentum; instead, the Television Academy barred Dragon from eligibility in 2024.

According to the Academy, all entries for the comedy, drama, reality, short-form, and variety categories must have aired a minimum of six episodes by May 31 of any given year in order to qualify for that year’s Emmys. House of the Dragon did not air the sixth episode of season 2 until July 14, well after the cut-off date. So, though the HBO stalwart will likely gobble up a number of nominations in the future, it will have to wait until the 2025 Emmys for that chance at recognition.

In the meantime, the now-beloved cast—including Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Eve Best, Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Ewan Mitchell, Harry Collett, Phia Saban, Fabien Frankel, and many others—are awaiting plans for House of the Dragon season 3. After the season 2 finale dropped in August, creator Ryan Condal revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that production on season 3 would likely launch in early 2025. As he told Entertainment Weekly in May, “You certainly don’t want to rush to get to an end, but you also don’t want to overstay your welcome. You want to find this very satisfying place to go out that ties up enough loose ends and leaves others intentionally open because, as we know, this history marches on for another 150 years to Daenerys.”

Maybe before that 150-year period ends—and perhaps as early as next year!—Dragon will finally earn itself some major Emmy wins.
