Hugh Jackman as Wolverine looking angry and both running and fighting in Deadpool & Wolverine

As Hugh Jackman is taking part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this summer, the X-Men star shares how Deadpool & Wolverine gave him a conclusion to a 24-year-old issue. Despite having retired from the role in 2017 following Logan, Jackman is returning to play Wolverine, only this time as part of the MCU timeline. Deadpool & Wolverine will not only bring Wade Wilson into the MCU, but it also opens up the potential for Jackman’s X-Men hero to finally meet the Avengers down the line.

In a new interview with Screen Rant to promote Deadpool & Wolverine, Jackman was asked if he was able to unlock anything with this new portrayal of Wolverine in the Phase 5 installment. The Australian star opened up on how working with Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds allowed him to crack a longtime obstacle that he has been trying to overcome for over 20 years in playing the iconic character. See what Jackman shared below:

Dude, I’m so glad you mentioned it, and yes, because of these guys. I actually said very early on, I said, “This is something that I’ve been trying to crack. I haven’t been able to. It’s been bothering me for 24 years, and I pitched it in different variants.” We just couldn’t get there, whether it was me and these guys wrote something that unlocked it for me, and there’s so much in the writing that they did for me. I mean, to see Wolverine with Deadpool is a whole different tone, but I’m so grateful for that. I feel such a relief, and I’m so glad you asked me the question. So yes is the answer, and I can’t wait for you guys to discover it.

How Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Is Different In Deadpool 3

The Deadpool & Wolverine creative team have made it clear that they are not going to undo the events of Logan, which is why the MCU installment will center on a Logan variant. With The Multiverse Saga being utilized for Deadpool & Wolverine, this is the perfect timing to have Jackman play a new take on the Marvel icon. Through the various marketing for Deadpool & Wolverine, there are a lot of differences with this iteration of the mutant.

To begin with, even though Jackman’s main Logan has a complex history, this Wolverine has a very dark background that will haunt the hero throughout Deadpool & Wolverine. In his world, Wolverine was, in one way or another, responsible for the fall of his fellow X-Men. With a darker foundation for this Wolverine variant, there will definitely be an emotional red thread explored in the upcoming MCU-set threequel.

However, a fun and big difference with the new Wolverine is that Jackman will finally be in his comic book-accurate costume in Deadpool & Wolverine, which has been a long time coming for the audience. Time will tell what other dark elements are following this fresh incarnation of Wolverine. But with less than a week left of waiting, it won’t be much longer until the MCU audience knows fully what is in store for Jackman’s character in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theaters on July 26.
