The End? Not So Fast! The Witcher Showrunner Hints at More Spin-Offs Coming!

The fourth season of Netflix’s The Witcher is set to premiere this year, while the final season, Season 5, is expected in 2026. One would think that the double offering with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia standing in for Henry Cavill, would be the final note in the Netflix Witcher journey, but that may not be so.

Lauren Hissrich teases more possible Witcher spinoffs after Season 5

In an interview with SFX Magazine, showrunner Lauren Hissrich discussed the journey of The Witcher franchise on Netflix and ended on this quote: “We made a conscious decision to end the live-action show after season five, where the books ended. We felt very strongly about that, but it doesn’t mean that all Witcher storytelling has to be done.

The discussion that preluded that was the following: “I love this world. I’m constantly looking for other opportunities to expand it outside of the main mothership show. I will never forget Kelly Luegenbiehl, who was the Netflix executive at the time, who sold the show with me. It was maybe about a month before the show launched on Netflix, and I came to her and I said, ‘I’m having all of these ideas about spin-offs.’ She was like, ‘Cool. Let’s see if anyone watches the show.’ Because, of course, you never know.”

She continued: “As soon as it did, as soon as we were able to start looking at who was watching it, who cared about it, who wanted more – one of the things I felt most strongly about, and it’s not a surprise to anyone, is that the female characters really found an audience. I think it found a lot of people who felt marginalised from fantasy shows in the past.

So will there indeed be another spinoff after The Witcher Season 5? Only time will tell. The audience for the main series has shrunk quite a bit season after season and while Nightmare of the Wolf did rather well, Blood Origin was far from a success and The Rats: A Witcher’s Tale spinoff only filmed one episode out of many during its troubled production with Netflix now trying to salvage the existing footage two years after the fact.

Sirens of the Deep is coming soon and Doug Cockle’s involvement is certainly a plus, so there is hope for it to be a success. Will it be satisfactory for Netflix higher-ups to greenlight more Witcher content considering the overall spinoff track record? We’ll have to wait and see.

The Witcher Season 4 is in post-production for a 2025 release. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book Crossroads of the Crow is available in Poland with The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep anime set for a February 2025 and CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4 is now in full production.
