Happy’s Place has already resolved a major conflict after only eight episodes, which is not ideal for the comedy’s longevity. Happy’s Place is Reba McEntire’s latest sitcom, which launched in October on CBS. It revolves around McEntire’s character, Bobbie, adjusting to her discovery that her late father left half of his bar to Isabella (Belissa Escobedo), the half-sister Bobbie never knew existed. Isabella is the polar opposite of Bobbie, leading the two to frequently butt heads.
Most of Happy Place‘s scenes take place in the bar that Bobbie and Isabella run. The show’s subplots involve the relationships between various characters working there, such as grumpy cook Emmett and accountant Steve, whose OCD and anxiety lead him to work at the bar instead of in an office. However, the heart of the show is the relationship between Bobbie and Isabella, which was initially adversarial because Bobbie didn’t want to accept her half-sister’s existence, though the two soon became roommates. Happy’s Place has secured a full-season order, but the fall finale focuses on Bobbie helping Isabella with a boyfriend problem.
Isabella’s Boyfriend Dilemma Highlights How Much Bobbie Has Changed Towards Her Sister
Instead of Being Annoyed, Bobbie Offers Isabella’s Support
During the initial few episodes of Happy’s Place, Bobbie couldn’t stand Isabella. She didn’t want to give her half of the bar, didn’t want to listen to her ideas, and didn’t even want her in town. However, by Happy’s Place episode 8, this seems to have changed, judging by the way Bobbie handles Isabella’s boyfriend dilemma. The story begins with Bobbie writing a break-up letter for Isabella, which fails because the man in question shows up at the tavern without having read it, and later, Bobbie encourages Isabella not to settle for him if she’s not really into him.
This storyline demonstrates that Bobbie has started to see Isabella as a younger sister rather than a nuisance she wants to get rid of. Isabella even comments that Bobbie is “like a real sister” after Bobbie convinces her to let go of her previous belief that true love doesn’t exist and to move on from a man Isaella is not interested in. This comment further solidifies the idea that Bobbie has completely changed her feelings toward Isabella.
Bobbie Has Fully Accepted Isabella In Happy’s Place
This Positive News Makes It Unclear What Happens Next
Bobbie’s initial hostility toward Isabella was somewhat difficult to watch so it’s good that she’s softening somewhat. However, the conflict between Bobbie and Isabella shouldn’t be completely resolved in only eight episodes. Friction between Happy Place‘s sisters was meant to be at the heart of the series, so ending it so quickly makes it difficult to see where Happy’s Place goes from here. Additionally, the show is missing out on comedy gold by making the relationship so harmonious so quickly.
Bobbie and Isabella live together, which offers a lot of opportunities for humor based on their awkwardness and discomfort with each other. Thus, it would have made sense to downgrade Bobbie’s feelings toward Isabella from hatred to awkwardness, but going all the way to acceptance doesn’t work at this early juncture because it stifles further storytelling based on the sisters’ difficulties with their relationship.
There are a limited number of stories that can be told about Bobbie helping Isabella with an issue or vice versa before the series gets stale.
Of course, Happy’s Place episode 8 demonstrates that there are stories that can be told without Bobbie and Isabella disliking each other. However, there are a limited number of stories that can be told about Bobbie helping Isabella with an issue or vice versa before the series gets stale. Thus, by ending the Isabella/Bobbie conflict too soon, Happy’s Place limits its storytelling abilities.
What Bobbie & Isabella’s Changed Relationship Means For Happy’s Place
The Focus Must Shift To Secondary Characters Or To The Bar Itself
Although it will be more challenging to come up with story ideas, the change in Bobbie and Isabella’s relationship doesn’t have to mean the series runs out of ideas before Happy’s Place season 2. If Happy Place shifts its premise somewhat, it can still have entertaining, funny stories. However, these stories need to have heart behind them. Specifically, Happy’s Place needs to do something more with Gabby (Melissa Peterman). Gabby desperately wants positive attention, which can be a great source of humor if used properly, but jokes about people not knowing her real name or identity have already gotten old.
These changes would allow the series to become a true ensemble comedy that could last several years despite quickly wrapping up its initial conflict.
The key for Happy’s Place to succeed despite this quick wrap-up of the Bobbie/Isabella story is for the secondary characters to be fleshed out more. Each has one defining trait, such as Emmett’s grumpiness or Steve’s OCD-related difficulties. If these characters can be given more heartfelt storylines, it will help keep the show fresh and interesting. Additionally, Isabella and Bobbie’s old relationship issues could flare up occasionally instead of being solved completely. These changes would allow the series to become a true ensemble comedy that could last several years despite quickly wrapping up its initial conflict.
