“I’m sorry”: What is Happening With The Marvels? Even Brie Larson’s Co-star is Clueless About Her Return After MCU’s Biggest Flop

The Marvels was a colossal disappointment for the franchise and even Brie Larson’s co-star doesn’t know about her character’s future in the MCU.

MCU truly bounced back with the billion-dollar hit Deadpool & Wolverine after its biggest flop, The Marvels. Brie Larson’s film saw an abysmal performance at the theaters, as the female-led cast failed to bring fans to watch the film. The massive budget of the film caused Disney to lose money in hundreds of millions.

While Larson has hinted that The Marvels is not the end of the road for her character in the MCU, her co-star Teyonah Parris is clueless about her return. Alongside Larson and Parris, Iman Vellani was the other lead in the film, who will likely return for a Young Avengers film.

Brie Larson’s The Marvels ended its theatrical run with $206 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo). It is a decent enough number for any other film, not to mention that it’s the highest-grossing movie in director Nia DaCosta’s filmography. However, the budget of the film was enormously high, making it a huge box office bomb.

According to Forbes, Disney made the film on a gross budget of $374 million. The movie was set for a disaster after poor marketing, negative word-of-mouth, and disastrous opening numbers at $46.1 million (via Variety). While the film was criticized for its weak plot, many believed that the film failed as a result of a planned attack against the all-female lead. Some fans also claim that superhero fatigue is to blame for the film’s failure.

After its colossal flop, fans didn’t hear much about the future of The Marvels team in the MCU. It appears that it isn’t just the fans who are clueless, even the stars of the film don’t know whether the franchise has any role for them in future movies. Appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Teyonah Parris, who played Monica Rambeau, shared that she had no clue about her return.

Parris answered a fan question about the same, “I have no clue. I’m sorry. I don’t know.” Cohen had reassuring words for the star, “On behalf of your bank account, I hope that she’s coming back.” In the end credits scene of The Marvels, Parris’ character wakes up in another reality and sees her mother Maria Rambeau alive and well. She also meets Kelsey Grammer’s Beast who explains that she is in another universe, where the X-Men exist.

The ending opens up new possibilities for Parris’ character. If she gets to return to the role, she may have a role alongside the X-Men. A report from The Cosmic Circus suggests that Beast is all set to return to the Avengers films, which means that Monica Rambeau could make an appearance alongside him.

Brie Larson hinted at a possible return to her Marvel role

Earlier, speculations arose that Brie Larson could possibly quit the role after the hate she received for both her appearances. It was also suggested in the book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, where it was mentioned that she “grew disillusioned” with her role.

However, the Lessons in Chemistry star gave a cryptic answer that hinted at her possible return when asked about her future Marvel plans. Speaking to The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast, she shared that she had a great time with Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani. She shared that she knew things that she couldn’t reveal to the public. She shared (via Yahoo! Entertainment):

I just loved being with those ladies so much… And you know, as for the future, there’s things that I know, but I can’t tell you.

Larson recently announced her West End debut in Daniel Fish’s production of Elektra (via @brielarson/Instagram). Fans of the actress hope to see her back in the Avengers films after she was once slated to lead the team in MCU Phases 4,5, & 6.

The Marvels is now available for streaming on Disney+.
