He spent three years stationed at RAF Valley in Anglesey serving as a pilot between 2010 and 2013.
It is home to No. 4 Flying Training School (4FTS), responsible for training the UK’s next generation of world-class fighter pilots.
The first stop of the day was the Air Traffic Control Tower where the Prince visited the control rooms and heard from staff about new surveillance equipment.
He then found out about a £44million project which is currently underway to refurbish RAF Valley’s second runway.
The Prince of Wales next witnessed a training exercise as crew members took part in a simulated fire response.
He presented The Prince of Wales Award to Flight Lieutenant Jake Fleming which recognises the best Qualified Flying Instructor within
the 4FTS.
When William left RAF Valley in 2013, he said: “I know that I speak for Catherine when I say that I have never in my life known somewhere as beautiful and as welcoming as Anglesey.
“I know that both of us will miss it terribly when my search and rescue tour of duty comes to an end next month and we have to move elsewhere.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making my wife and me so welcome when we arrived here, as you do thousands of visitors each year.”
He said the island had been their first home together and would always be an “immensely special place for us both”.
And added: “Catherine and I look forward to returning again and again over the coming years with our family.”
