Virgin River fans baffled by missing detail Mel and Jack never bring up

A fan of the hit series Virgin River has been left scratching their head over a puzzling omission in Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan’s (Martin Henderson) environment.

The Netflix favorite, set in a quaint town in Northern California, has captured the hearts of viewers worldwide, with anticipation building for its sixth season release this December.

The show chronicles the life of nurse practitioner Mel, who relocates to Virgin River after a personal loss and quickly becomes enamored with local bar owner and ex-Marine Jack.

Despite recently earning the title of Netflix’s longest-running English-language series with a seventh season greenlight, some sharp viewers have spotted a few inconsistencies throughout the show.

One recent gripe pertains to the absence of wildlife, considering Virgin River is shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, reports the Express.

Virgin River has recently become Netflix’s longest-running English-language series

“Having lived in BC for a few months (where VR is filmed) this summer I’m on a rewatch and I’m amazed at how bears don’t even get a mention in the show,” a viewer expressed on Reddit.

“I went to ‘Jack’s Bar’ in Squamish and there was fresh bear scat right outside it. Everywhere I hiked, never solo, we carried bear spray and local friends said that they’d even carry a firearm for protection in the back country.

“Meanwhile Mel, Brie (Zibby Allen), Cameron (Mark Ghanime), Jack and Denny (Kai Bradbury) are all out there running and fishing on the trails without so much as a bottle of water between them.

“Mel is even wearing earbuds so wouldn’t be able to hear approaching wildlife. She and Jack think a rustle in the bushes is a squirrel.”

One ardent fan pointed out that although Virgin River, the TV show adapted from Robyn Carr’s bestselling novels, isn’t set in British Columbia where bears are prevalent, they believe there should still be some reference to bear encounters as mentioned in the books.

“Now I’m reading the books for the first time and there’s the thing they left out: Jack’s Bar has hunting trophies all over the walls and Jack tells Mel how he had to shoot a mother bear who was charging him when he was fishing at the river,” said the viewer, lamenting a missed story element.

Echoing a piece of dialogue from the source material, they remarked, “‘You don’t take a minute to load your rifle if a bear is charging you. Bear fish in the same rivers we do.'”

Despite Virgin River portraying an idyllic small-town charm, the reality in California, where it’s set, could be far riskier with its population of 25,000 to 35,000 black bears potential threats to people.

Should Mel be on the lookout for bears?

Even though one fan made an argument saying, “Because it’s set in Humboldt County, CA. We have bears here too, but they don’t roam that freely and aren’t seen that often.”

Yet another local insisted: “Never been a bear attack here ever. Bears are smart and have manners and know how to cohabitate peacefully with the humans that are squatting on their land.”

Nevertheless, some enthusiasts of Virgin River may find it peculiar that such an aspect is entirely omitted on the show, particularly when protagonist Mel ventures alone into the forest without any form of self-defense.

Virgin River season 6 will be released Thursday, December 19 on Netflix.
